Glen Piatt Obituary

Glen Piatt of Bradenton, Florida died on November 3rd, 2019.  He was born on June 17th, 1924 in Red Key, Indiana to Mary and Glen Piatt Sr.  He moved to Fairfield, IL during high school years where he met and married Freda Bruce in 1941. He and Freda were married for 65 years before her death in 2007.

Glen joined the Marines in 1943 and served in the Philippines during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1945.  He served with the Marine Aircraft Group; was a “Dauntess Dive Bomber”.   During this time their son, Mike Piatt, was born.  After the war, their daughter Julie Piatt (McCallie), was born.  They lived in Carlsbad, New Mexico for a few years, then back to Fairfield, IL where Glen joined his father-in-law, Fred Bruce in the oil business. Glen coached Little League, Babe Ruth, and served on the school board during the 1950’s.  From there they moved to Union City, TN and started the Piatt and Son oil business working with Shell Oil Company for over thirty years.  He served on the City Council in the 1960’s, and coached his daughter’s softball team, with great success. Due to his lifelong love of flying and his experience as a gunner in the service, Glen decided to obtain his pilot’s license when he was 50 years young. He and his wife, Freda enjoyed flying to see relatives and friends on a regular basis in a little two seater Cessna airplane.  He was President of the Tennessee Oilman’s Association in the mid 70’s and in the late 80’s the Piatt’s moved to Florida where they settled. Glen was an avid golfer and loved to socialize with his many neighbors, riding his golf cart and his three wheeled bicycle around.

Glen was preceded in death by his wife, Freda, and son Mike.  His daughter Julie (Punky) McCallie lives in Knoxville, TN with her husband Johnny.  He has four grandchildren, Spencer (Blair) McCallie of Littleton, Colorado.  Chad (Elaine) Piatt of Martin, TN, Clint Piatt of Chattanooga, TN, and Courtney (Jeremy) Blackwell also of Union City, TN and 13 great grandchildren also survive.

Glen was very active in his community and was a very proud American and Marine.  Once a Marine, always a Marine.  OORAH!  He loved his country and family very much.  If you would like to make a donation, please do so in Glen’s memory to your local Salvation Army or Humane Society.  A private family graveside memorial service will be held in December at Richland Cemetery southwest of Fairfield, Illinois with full military rites provided by Anthony Wayne Post 176 American Legion and Wayne Memorial Post 4535 VFW.   Nale's Funeral Home of Fairfield is assisting the family.
