Bill Garrett Obituary

80-year-old Fairfield resident, Bill G. Garrett, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 at his home. A veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he served aboard the Battle Ship Iowa for 44 months. He had taught school at Merriam Grade School, Fairfield Grade School, Wayne City High School and retired as Athletic Director and Coach at Fairfield Community High School. He was a member of the area Special Olympics, Fairfield Elks Lodge, VFW 4535, and Anthony Wayne American Legion, Retired Teachers Association, Wayne County Retired Teachers Association, was Past President of the Old Timers & Alumni Association and served on the Fairfield Board of Fire and Police for many years. Bill was born April 10, 1931 in Fairfield to Glen and Rosalee Eckleberry Garrett. On August 18, 1956 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Black in Fairfield, Illinois. Surviving include a son, Dirk Garrett and his wife Lynn of Breese, IL; three daughters, Toby Hucker and her husband Doyle and Joan Wallace and her husband Kirk of Fairfield and Elaine Henley and her husband Raymond of Fort Worth, TX; three sisters, Molly Hollett of Grain Valley, MO, Janice Bass of Fairfield and Carolyn Briley of Missouri; a sister-in-law, Katy Black of Fairfield and 8 grandchildren. His parents, wife, 3 brothers and 2 sisters preceded Bill in death. Funeral services for Bill G. Garrett will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 22 at the First Christian Church in Fairfield with Brother Craig Scott officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery with military rites provided by the Wayne Memorial Post 4535 VFW and Anthony Wayne Post 176 American Legion. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 Friday evening, Oct. 21 at First Christian Church in Fairfield. Memorials may be made to the Voice of Democracy of the VFW or Good Samaritan Hospice and will be accepted at Nales Funeral Home in Fairfield that is in charge of all the arrangements.
