Gilbert “Gibby” William Andrews, 86, passed away at the home of his son, Bill Andrews, on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020. Gibby was born in Mill Shoals, Illinois on December 14, 1933, the son of Samuel White Andrews and Marie Elizabeth (Miller) Andrews.
Gibby lived most of his life in Fairfield except for a few years which he spent in Florida and Alabama. He went to work for Western Waterproofing of St Louis when he was 19 years old. In the early 1960s, at the age of 27, he was transferred to Florida to oversee all the jobs in that state. He lived in Clearwater with his family but set up his office in Tampa.
Gibby returned to Fairfield and started S & G Salvage Yard on North First Street with his brother, Sammy Andrews. Later, he opened the Fairfield Speed Shop and the Fairfield Drag Strip which he operated for several years. Gibby developed Andrews Acres and managed a construction company which built homes, apartments and offices. Later in life, he was involved in oil operations and trucking. He was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Gibby is survived by his three children, Billy Gib (Jill) Andrews, Dana (Ed) Morgan, and Beth (Kevin) McNeill all of Fairfield; his sister Alice Andrews Marshel of Fairfield; Darlene Andrews and step-son, Jamie Ralph; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Gibby was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Marie Andrews, sister Betty Galas, and brother Sammy Andrews.
