80-year-old Albion resident, Herschel E. (Gene) Smith, died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 16 at his home. He worked for Nale's Funeral Home as a grave digger and cemetery set-up man for 40 years. He was also an Edwards County Deputy Sheriff from 1973 to 1989, and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Burnt Prairie Cumberland Presbyterian Church, past commander of the American Legion and VFW, retired director and lifetime member of the Wabash Valley Conservation Lake Club. Surviving are his wife Bernice of Albion; two sons, James P. Smith and Johnny E. Smith both of Albion; one daughter, Beverly Kortge of West Salem; one brother, Charles Jack Smith of Johnsonville; one half-brother, Wayne Smith of Fairfield; three half-sisters, Donna Russell of Fairfield, and Pat Felix and Virginia Wilson both of Indiana; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services for Herschel "Gene" Smith will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 20 at the Burnt Prairie Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, August 19 at Nale's Funeral Home in Albion. Online condolences may be expressed at nalesfuneralhome.com
