Richard Caldwell Obituary

93-year-old Fairfield resident, Richard L. Caldwell died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Heritage Woods in Centralia. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and at the end of the war, was involved in the liberation and transportation of the survivors from the Nordhausen Concentration Camp. He was retired from Airtex Products in Fairfield after 39 years, having worked in the setup and grinding department. After retirement, he sold wood crafts and operated a produce business south of Fairfield. Richard was born April 14, 1919 in Wayne County, Illinois to Harold and Savilla Simpson Caldwell. He was united in marriage to Martha Mae Reed on August 3, 1941 in St. Charles, Missouri. Survivors include a son, Ronald G. Caldwell and his wife Rose Marie of Centralia, Illinois; a daughter, LaDonna Douglas and her husband Lyle of Tuscola, Illinois; three sisters-in-law, Eva Borah, Agnes Michaels and Naomi Clevenger, all of Fairfield; 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, wife Martha, and 1 son Lee. Services for Richard L. Caldwell will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Nale's Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Wayne Memorial VFW Post 4535 and Anthony Wayne American Legion Post 176. Visitation will be noon until the time of service Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Nale's Funeral Home in Fairfield. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and will be accepted at Nale's Funeral Home in Fairfield.
